Hypoxia and pulse oximetry
hypoxia and pulse oximetryOxygen in human bodyWith every breath, you inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Oxygen is an indispensable requirement for the proper function of the human body. Ninety percent of our body’s energy comes from oxygen respiration. Most of the metabolism process in our body consumes oxygen to some extent. Oxygen detoxifies the blood, and enhances the body's absorption of nutrients. The brain is the most sensitive organ in our body to oxygen deprivation. Brain cells will deteriorate rapidly and begin to die within five minutes after the oxygen supply is interrupted.Symptoms of hypoxiaDeficiency of oxygen in the human body is known as hypoxia. hypoxia may cause many diseases. Symptoms of oxygen deficiency include: overall body weakness, stomach irritation, bacterial, viral, or parasitic infection, bronchial problems, depression, dizziness, fatigue, irrational behavior, irritability, lowered immunity to colds, flu and infections, memory loss, muscle aches, poor digestion, Cyanosis, headache, euphoria, visual impairment, etc. [1] In severe cases, or hypoxia of very rapid onset, loss of consciousness, seizures, coma and death may occur. [2]Causes and types of hypoxiahypoxia may be caused by many factors, from environmental oxygen deficiency to tissue problems in the human body. hypoxia can be categorised in following types according to the causes [2]:(1) hypoxemic hypoxiahypoxemic hypoxia is caused by hypoxemia, an abnormal deficiency in the concentration of oxygen in arterial blood. [3] In this case, partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood is low. hypoxemic hypoxia may be caused by: Low partial pressure of oxygen in atmosphere, for example the high altitudes that pilots or mountain climbers usually reach; A decrease in oxygen saturation of the blood caused by sleep apnea or hypopnea; Abnormal pulmonary function or respiratory obstruction. FAQ: I am a community responder and...
Question for Finger Pulse Oximeter OctiveTech 300C : I am a community responder and need to buy various items for my kit myself due to budget restraints by the government, i treat all ages is there 1 machine that would do all or would i need to buy more than one ??Answer: Hello and thank you for your interest in clinical guard. Our fingertip units are designed for adult use, however we do carry two specific fingertips units which are suitable for pediatric use (children between ages of 2-13 years old). It is not recommended to use an adult unit on pediatrics as the readings can be inconsistent due to the sensor calibration and the size of the fingertip area. Pediatric units are also a little more resilient to motion interference. Our two pediatric fingertip units are as follows: OctiveTech 300PN and CMS 50QA. Detailed information on both these units can be found within the product listings. Please do not hesitate to contact our customer care Team should you have any additional questions. A Testimonial from a Happy Customer STEFA ...
This is not the first time I chose to work with clinical guard. It is actually the second. Since 13 months ago, I bought for myself a clinical pulse oxymeter, with which I am very satisfied. It is durable, very affordable, and it actually came very quickly via post. So, as expected, when a friend needed an affordable solution to the pulse oxymetry problem, I suggested (and then bought) the same heavy duty oled oxymeter for him. He is now using it in his work, and also is quite satisfied by it. I never had a doubt..! I am a doctor in Greece, now specializing in pneumonology. Thank you again.L Continue Reading→

Product Review for SonoTrax Baby Doppler Basic with 3MHz Probe from Mandy ...
4.8 STARS! SonoTrax Baby Doppler Basic with 3MHz Probe I love hearing the heartbeat! I have a history of miscarriage. With my current pregnancy my husband and I decided to purchase this Doppler so that we could hear the heartbeat whenever we want. I learned that it works significantly better with a full bladder. I was able to hear my baby's heartbeat at 10 weeks and it is so very reassuring to be able to know on a daily basis that everything is OK rather than having to wait for weeks at a time for my next doctor appointment. I asked my doctor how safe it is and she told me that I can use it for a few minutes everyday. The Doppler has significantly changed my experience with pregnancy. I am not as stressed and my doctor appointments are not as stressful because I have had success with finding the heart within a minute every single time I have attempted to find it (since I have been doing it with a full bladder). I highly recommend this Doppler, my doctor said that it must be a good brand to be able to pick up the heartbeat already with how my uterus is tilted. It was totally worth the $$. ... When should I start an HPT (Home Pregnancy Test)?
A few factors have impacts on the first day you can find a positive result. Sensitivity of a testing product is very important. Taking advantage of the increased sensitivity of our products, you can detect a positive result as early as 3-4 days past implantation which occurs (generally speaking) between 5 and 10 DPO. The speed of the production of hCG differs among women. Frequency of urination can influence the result. It is recommended to use the first urine of the day, or use the urine hold for 3 to 4 hours. The more hCG accumulates in urine, the more possible you can have a correct positive result. The time of endometrial implantation of the blastocyst is another factor. The blastocyst normally forms on day 5 after fertilization. The location of blastocyst implantation can influence rate of hCG production and thus have an impact on the testing result. Regularity of period also may result in a different result. It is recommended to maintain a bbt chart, so accurate key days can be determined and then a good testing date can be scheduled. A Brief History of Pulse Oximetry
A Brief History of pulse oximetry 1850's Russian physiologist I.M. Sechenov developed a vacuum blood pump which was laterly used for research purpose. [8] 1864 Sir George Gabriel Stokes, 1st Baronet, an Irish physicist and mathematician, discovered the respiratory function of haemoglobin. [1,2] 1876 Karl von Vierordt, a German physician who developed techniques and tools for the monitoring of blood circulation, used a light source to distinguish fully saturated blood from that which is not. [1,3] 1898 English physiologist Halden brought forward the principle of chemical expulsion of oxygen from its complexes with haemoglobin. J.Barcoft used this principle for the examination of gas composition of blood. [8] 1900 R. Vierordt demonstrated that application of Hufner tourniquet caused a decrease in the intensity of red light passed through a human hand. 1922 American biochemist D. van Slyke combined the vacuum and chemical principles of gas expulsion from blood and used them in his manometric appratus.[8] 1932 German physiologist L. Nicolai optically recorded the in vivo oxygen consumption of a hand after circulatory occlusion in Gottingen, Germany. [5] 1935 The first device developed by Carl Matthes to noninvasively measure oxygen saturation in human blood by transilluminating it with coloured light, which employed an ear probe. [1,2,5] 1939 K.Matthews and F. Gross used photometry in examination of the ear auricle. Two-wavelength spectrophotometry was used to avoid the absorption of light by surrounding tissues. 1940's The development of pulese oximeter intensified due to the need of pilots flying at high altitudes in lack pressurized cabins during WW II. This technique saved pilots in the war.[3,5] 1941 oximetry testing is first used to identify the process of obtaining saturation readings with an pulse oximeter. [1] 1942 E.Goldie used compression of earlobe to obtain "bloodless" reference. Continue Reading→

When does implantation occur? What are signs of implantation?
Normally, implantation occurs 7 to 10 days after ovulation. Before implantation, fertilized egg is just free-floating in the womb. At the time of fertilization, incipient embryo (or blastocyst) is just a cluster of multiple cells. Blastocyst must develop and grow through several phases and stages before it can be attached to the side of womb. pregnancy takes place at the moment of implantation, while placental tissue starts to secret hormone hCG, when early pregnancy test can be taken. There are a couple of signs to indicate implantation, Positive pregnancy test. As false positive pregnancy test result rarely happens, positive early pregnancy test result gives a solid confirmation of implantation. Some women may experience implantation bleeding, a very light spotting which may occur right after embyo implants in the lining of the uterus. Typical color of the spotting is brown or possibly reddish. Continue Reading→

Peak Flow Meter 101
peak flow meter 101What is a peak flow meterA peak flow meter is a device that measures the speed of air blowing out of your lungs after a deep inhalation. In other words, it measures your ability to push air out of your lungs. It is for the monitoring, management and control of asthma or other respitory conditions. It takes measurements of peak expiratory flow rate (PEF or PEFR) and forced expiratory volume in one second. How does a peak flow meter work?peak flow meters can be categorized as mechanical and electronic. Most of peak flow meters are mechanical ones while electronic peak flow meters are now emerging into the market. The essential part of a peak flow meter is its transduction system which transfers the input that a patient produces (the air one pushes out of the lungs) into a signal which can be measured. There are five most commonly used transduction systems: variable-orifice, fixed-orifice or venturi, stator/rotor, pneumotachographs and ultrasonic [1]. Mechanical peak flow meters are designed under different principles while most electronic peak flow meters are designed as a stator/rotor system. How does an electronic (digital) peak flow meter work?A digital peak flow meter, such as the microlife Electronic Peak Flow Monitor Model PF-100, normally “incorporates a removable micro medical digital volume transducer which consists of an acrylic tube with a freely rotating vane supported on jeweled bearings positioned between a fixed swirl plate and a cross bar. As air is passed through the transducer, a vortex is created by the swirl plate, which causes the low inertia vane to rotate. The rotation of the vane is detected by the interruption of an infrared beam which produces an electrical pulse train at the output of a phototransistor. The number of rotations is proportional to the volume of air passed through the turbine, and the rate of rotation is proportional to the flow rate. With flow rate and correspondent time, FEV1 can be calcula Continue Reading→

Product Review for Pulse Oximeter OctiveTech 300CSE - Heavy Duty from Alan ...
4.8 STARS! Pulse Oximeter OctiveTech 300CSE - Heavy Duty A good news for patients with respiratory problems I am a doctor working in a respiratory department of our local hospital. We need some reliable and accurate oximeters to check the spo2 level of our patients who have been experiencing respiratory diseases such as copd, emphysema or asthma, etc. We need to get their exact blood saturation level and then determine how much of oxygen they should be placed on. One of our colleagues searched on the Internet and purchased two 300CSE of octive tech family half a month ago. The price is so good, however, it does not compromise the quality. It works great, as accurately as expensive meters we've got before. It's a lightweight, OLED display, one-button operation design, two-viewable directions. These features make the data conveniently read by doctors and our patients. And its latex-free probe eliminates the risk of allergic reactions some of our patients may encounter. So it's really worth it and good news for those who in need of a good pulse ox! ... Continue Reading→

How frequent should we make love? And when is the right time during my cycle?
Although ovulation can be predicted, the egg could drop unexpectedly, earlier or later. Thus, it is recommended to try to make love at least twice a week, as a general TTC schedule. Women with irregular cycle should make love even not on ovulation time window. Fortunately, sperm are able to live a few days in a woman’s body.An optimized “timed intercourse” is taken place from 2 - 3 days before ovulation. For example, a woman who has an ideal 28 day period is likely to ovulate on day 14 which means that, a scheduled intercourse should start from cycle day 10 to cycle day 14. BBT charting and monitoring fertility signs can facilitate learning your unique and non-hypothetical cycle traits.Similarly, if you are taking Continue Reading→

Pulse Oximeter 101
What is a pulse oximeter? Before the advent of the pulse oximeter, assessing arterial oxyhemoglobin saturation required the use of expensive blood-gas analyzers and invasive sampling of arterial blood [1,5]. Although blood-gas analyzers still can be used nowadays, the standard method of measuring oxygen saturation has been greatly changed and improved by pulse oximeter. Generally speaking, a pulse oximeter such as octivetech 300c is a medical device that is used for non-invasively measuring oxygen saturation in a patient's blood, as one of the indices of the patient's medical condition, either continuously or intermittently. The invention of the pulse oximeter made the oxygen saturation measurement much more efficient and convenient. How does a pulse oximeter work? A typical pulse oximeter shines a pair of small light-emitting diodes(LED) facing a photodiode through a translucent part of the patient's body, usually a fingertip or an earlobe. One LED is red, with wavelength of 660 nm, and the other is infrared, 905, 910, or 940 nm. Absorption at these wavelengths is significantly different between oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin, therefore the oxyhemoglobin/deoxyhemoglobin ratio can be calculated from the ratio of the absorption of the red and infrared lights. [2] The monitored signal bounces in time with the heart beat because the arterial blood vessels expand and contract with each heartbeat. By assessing only the varying part of the absorption spectrum (basically, subtracting minimum absorption from peak absorption), a monitor ignores factors caused by other tissues, such as venous blood, skin, bone, muscle, fat, etc. and even (in most cases) fingernail polish and discerns only the absorption caused by arterial blood. Thus, detecting a pulse is necessary to the operation of a pulse oximeter or the oximeter will not function. [2, 3, 4] Due to the simplicity and the speed of measurement (they clip onto a finger and display results within a few Continue Reading→

What is the best day to conceive?
obstetricians/Gynaecologists normally recommend an intercourse frequency of two to three times a week, although there is a fertile window for a woman in each of her menstrual cycle. The reasons are, Unexpected ovulation occasionally occur. sperm can live up to one week in vagina under ideal condition. Once this basic regular lovemaking schedule is determined, identification of fertile time window can further impprove the possibility of conception. Peak fertility timeframe is normally from two to three days before ovulation until the day of ovulation. During the fertile time frame, making love daily can dramatically improve the chance of getting pregnant. However, if your partner has sperm count problem, please consult your doctor for an optimal lovemaking schedule. In addition, because the fact that sperm can survive several days in vagina, earlier intercourse before the fertile window also increases the odds of conception. Quality cervical mucus (egg white) not only indicates the upcoming ovulation, but also provides asylum for sperm. The longer the sperm survives, the better opportunity there is to conceive. There are a few methods to identify the fertile time window: BBT charting. Basal temperature shifts to a higher level indicates ovulation is coming. Use LH ovulation test or other devices . A positive LH ovulation test result indicates an upcoming ovulation. Other symptoms also indicate ovulation, e.g. ovulation cramps, mid-period pain and etc. Continue Reading→

A Testimonial from a Happy Customer Sara ...
My initial purchase was a nebulizer. One part was broken, it leaked, and I was not happy with the battery as it only worked for one treatment. The broken mouthpiece was replaced as well as the O ring. I was told the battery was not guaranteed and would not be replaced. The new mouth piece and O ring arrived quickly. The mouthpiece is fine, but the o ring did not stop the leak. The nebulizer works (but not with the battery) although I have to hold it with a towel as it still drips a little when I use it.My second order was for medicine cups and filters for the nebulizer. I made a error when I placed the order, but clinic guard phoned to correct the error and the order was reshipped quite quickly. ================================= We are sorry for the inconvenience caused. We tried contacting you concerning the leaking and left a voicemail and sent a few emails. Please call ClinicalGuard.com to resolve this issue as soon as possible. Our customer care staff is waiting to assist you with your nebulizer. 888-769-4827 ================================= Continue Reading→

What is a fetal Doppler and how does it work
What is a fetal doppler and how does it work? What is fetal doppler?A fetal doppler is a kind of non-invasive monitoring device for babies before delivery. It is a specially designed device to monitor fetal heart rate (FHR). fetal heart Rate assessment is an effective and useful means used to evaluate the fetal condition by identifying FHR patterns. Currently there are several ways to monitor the heart rate of the fetus before birth. electronic fetal monitoring is one of them. This device is usually used in labor and it is able to measure FHR and continuously records it in graphical form. Another type of monitoring fetus is by the aid of a special kind of stethoscope to measure baby’s heartbeat. This type of fetoscope is usually used after about 30-week gestation. Internal fetal monitoring of FHR is an invasive procedure. It needs a spiral electrode attached to the baby’s scalp to record and calculate the fetal heart rate. A handheld ultrasound fetal heart doppler is another avenue to detect the fetal heart rate. The little device makes use of the Principle of Doppler Effect to record and measure the FHR through an external non-invasive way. The fetal heart doppler works by means of emitting and receiving continuous ultrasound waves and then emitting the shift in frequency and wavelength. What kind of probe is Doppler equipped with? Each ultrasonic doppler is equipped with a 3MHz or a 2mhz probe. The probe is waterproof. The higher frequency probe will produce shorter wavelength than the lower frequency one. The results of millions of tests prove that 3MHz works better than the lower frequency one during pregnancy. Only in some special cases for overweight expecting mothers, 2mhz probe works better than higher frequency one.How does the fetal doppler work? The ultrasonic baby doppler provides the expecting mothers a safe method to listen to the fetal heart rate. The usage of such a device is comfortable and convenient. Who is afraid of the flu
Who is afraid of the fluHayden Henshaw, 18, got sick on a Tuesday in late April. He was at his high school in Cibolo, Texas, just outside San Antonio, when he came down with a fever of 103°F (39°C) and felt nauseated. Three days later, his doctor confirmed he had a mysterious new strain of swine flu that had just hit the U.S. — a virus that would eventually be labeled H1N1 of 2009. Health officials came to Hayden's house and asked him dozens of questions. Texas health officials took some measures including closing all 14 schools, wiping down the school district's 100-plus buses, etc. At the time, no one knew how deadly the virus was — or how many people had it.Hayden and his family handled this storm of ambiguity with relative grace showing that they were "just a normal family with a virus." His parents were worried but also grateful that health officials were taking the matter seriously. Other people, however, seemed to want more drama out of the story. Early on, when the family agreed to do a local TV-news interview and was even asked by the producers to wear face masks on camera. Meanwhile, regular people, some of their friends, started acting strangely toward the Henshaws. Their immediate neighbors and their friends from church were generous and helpful, but other neighbors crossed the street before walking in front of the Henshaw house. Hayden’s classmates even accused his family of exploiting the situation, making money off TV interviews. Some Bloggers accused pharmaceutical companies of intentionally concocting the virus in order to sell vaccines. On one website, conspiracy theorists researched public records about the Henshaws and deduced that they were actually victims of radiation poisoning — possibly from a dirty bomb smuggled in through Mexico.Hayden's case is a flare in the darkness, a warning that as the nation begins its second big battle with a strange flu virus. It brings a threat that we are not pa Continue Reading→
