You may have read the articles on our website explaining the principles of Pulse oximetry, how a pulse oximeter works and takes the measurements. This entry will hopefully provide an overview of the different types of oximeters available and their different purposes.

In general, there are three types of pulse oximeters. Stationary, Handheld oximeters, and Fingertip oximeters. The Stationary Pulse Oximetry systems are mainly used by hospitals as a part of a stack of patient monitoring devices. Handheld Pulse Oximeters. Handheld Pulse Oximeters usually consist of a base unit plus a finger probe. The base unit can be placed in a secure place away from the user in setings where he or she has limited mobility.

The ultra-portable nature of the fingertip style oximeters make them a popular choice for home use, physicians, nurses, paramedics, and others who are on the go. The non-prescription varieties are also used extensively by pilots, athletes, climbers, and others who engage in activities where monitoring the blood oxygen level is important. Although the display on fingertip pulse oximeters is limited by the smaller form factor, there are units available in our store with backlighting and organic-LED display technologies that significantly improve the readability in all lighting conditions.
